A extended journey around the Australian Coast is being halted following the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was left behind by the vessel on a remote coastal location.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the vessel, but parted ways from the excursion for a pause. The ship sailed away leaving her and came back after some time after the crew became aware the woman was unaccounted for.

A major hunt located her remains the subsequent day.

Officials are investigating the event, together with law enforcement and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer said that guests and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were told that the continuation of the voyage had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and prior mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he further stated that guests would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to organize the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated announcement, and said they had "delivered a order to the Captain" preventing any additional guests from boarding the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would attend the liner in Cairns upon its arrival.

Chronology of Events

The liner originally sailed from the coastal city on 24 October, and was only 48 hours into the voyage at the time of the senior passenger's passing. Lizard Island was the opening port on the itinerary.

Guests on board - who generally pay tens of thousands of dollars to join the cruise - were taken there for a day trip with the choice of trekking or snorkelling.

Family Response

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her family was "shocked and distressed that the vessel left the island after an organised excursion without my mum".

In her statement, she characterized her parent as an "vigorous 80-year-old" who was a affiliate of a bushwalking club.

"According to scant facts we have been told, it appears that there was a lapse of responsibility and basic judgment," she said.

She further stated that she wished the inquiry would be able to pinpoint what "the operator should have performed that might have protected Mum's being".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a very hot afternoon, and mother fell ill on the hill climb," she explained.

"She was asked her to head down, alone. Then the boat sailed away, apparently without conducting a roll call.

Operator Reaction

In a statement, the CEO confirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with officials to aid their inquiry".

He mentioned that the firm was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had extended its full support to the relatives.

The vessel caters for up to a hundred twenty passengers with forty-six staff, according to company details. It was specially constructed to reach isolated areas of the nation's coast and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - compact vessels used to transport travelers on day excursions.

Incidents of this nature are rare, and cruise ships have procedures to record which individuals are getting on or leaving, according to maritime specialists.
