During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
