Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
