Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
