"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous fans have also coveted the role.

One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals frequently feature them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

But the sister act will always be their primary focus.

"We have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
